Professional Development Plan

OTD Program:

Goal 1: By the end of my OT school journey, I will be prepared to pass the NBCOT Exam. 

-Following each semester, I will file away the contents from that semester into a filing system in anticipation of preparing for the NBCOT Exam. 

-I will complete an NBCOT practice exam at least twice to properly prepare.

Goal 2: I will have established and founded Xavier University's COTAD Chapter by the end of my 3.5 years in OT school. 

-I will organize a COTAD Kick-Off Event to promote and collect the Needs Assessment data necessary prior to becoming a chapter. 

-I will transition my leadership ship role to the younger cohorts to ensure the sustainability of the Chapter.

Goal 3: By the end of OT school, I will have published research in a peer-reviewed academic journal. 

-I will dedicate time to meeting with coauthors to work on articles. 

-I will investigate potential journals for publication. 

 

Year 1 of Post Graduation:

Goal 1: I will have a job in a pediatric setting by the end of OT school. 

-I will utilize my e-portfolio, capstone project, and knowledge as a general practitioner to apply and interview for OT jobs in various pediatric settings. 

-I will engage in salary negotiations as necessary utilizing my advocacy skills.

Goal 2:  Within my first year as an OT, I will increase my knowledge and working experience of working within the field of OT. 

-Once in a permanent, full-time position, I will network and collaborate with fellow healthcare professionals to further my understanding of working in interdisciplinary teams. 

-I will conduct and deliver high-quality OT services to children and their families.

Goal 3: I will continue to participate in scholarly endeavors as a new graduate to ensure I am practicing according to the most current evidence. 

-I will present my capstone research poster at AOTA Conference in 2024 and attend my first in-person conference. 

-I will continue to participate in AOTA Communities of Practice for hospital-based pediatrics and child and youth specialities. 

 

By 5 Years Post-Graduation:

Goal 1: I will have established a balance between work and family responsibilities within the first five years of practicing as an OT. 

-I will complete all documentation during my work day, limiting the need to take work home. 

-I will participate in self-care activities during the week nights and weekends to ensure occupational balance. 

​

Goal 2: Within my first five years of practice, I will continue to publish research to further enhance occupational therapy's evidence-based practice. 

-I will identify research gaps and aim to conduct research to fill such gaps in OT literature. 

-I will advocate for the continued need of OT research in clinical settings through publications and conference presentations to OTs and other healthcare professionals. 

​

Goal 3: I will enhance my own teaching abilities via becoming a fieldwork educator to share my knowledge with current OT students. 

-I will lead by example and increase OT student's exposure to the pediatric field of OT. 

-I will become a positive role model and mentor for OT students.
